Barnegat Lighthouse
At the northern end of the island, you will find the Barnegat Lighthouse which dates back to the late 1800's. It was designed by George Meade, the Civil War Union General. The lighthouse is situated in a park that also offers nature walks and fishing. There is some amount of handicapped access.
There are Nature trails that allow for bird watching and that highlight some of the native plant species. The lighthouse is open to the public for a nominal fee. You can climb to the top for a magnificent view of Long Beach Island and Island Beach State Park.
There is a walkway that runs over the jetty for a couple of hundred yards from the lighthouse itself. It offers a great view of the boats in the inlet and a place to try your luck at fishing. Watch the kids as the currents are quite swift in the inlet. The walkway is wheelchair accessible.
