Ship Bottom - Long Beach Island, New Jersey

Anchor from the Bark Fortuna
The town is named because of an interesting shipwreck in the early 1800's. After a storm the residents found a sailing ship aground in the surf. There was tapping from inside the hull so the townsfolk broke through and rescued a young woman who was trapped inside. There was a later shipwreck a couple of decades later of the Bark Fortuna which was widely photographed. The anchor in the picture above is from the wreck of the Fortuna, not the earlier shipwreck. The town is also prominent today because the causeway connects to Ship Bottom from Manahawkin and the mainland.
Ship Bottom has several hotels and dining establishments as well as family oriented attractions such as arcades and miniature golf. The bay is great for sailing, jet skiing and is especially noted for crabbing in the area. If you want to go offshore you are a little ways from the inlets. The beach is generally the same as the rest of the island. Keep in mind that beach badges purchased in Ship Bottom are only good in the borough and not valid in other municipalities.

For boaters, the Intracoastal waterway veers away from the island and Ship Bottom to pass under the main span of the causeway. However, there is a state channel that is well marked that runs along the Ship Bottom Bayfront.
