The USS Monssen was being towed while the March 1962 Nor’easter ravaged Long Beach Island. She broke loose from her tow and ended up hard aground in Holgate.

The Acme Bar in Beach Haven.

The Old Acme Bar in Beach Haven, NJ

The Acme was one of the hottest bars on LBI during the 1970’s.

The Ketch was once the Acme Hotel, Bar and Restaurant. During it’s heyday it was a favorite of celebrities such as Babe Ruth. It was also allegedly a speakeasy during prohibition. When the revenuers were on their way, the stash of not so legal booze could be dropped into the bay.

The Rip Tide, formerly The Antlers

The Rip Tide was on Dock Road adjacent to the Ketch (formerly the Acme).

The Rip Tide was a bar on Dock Road. It was next to the Acme Bar. Herb Fieler, a noted organist played there as well as at other venues on the island.

Daddy O Restaurant Hotel and Bar

Sept 2019 – I stopped in for a quick bite at the Daddy O Restaurant. I’ve passed by the place hundreds of times. I had heard mythical stories about the cost to eat there. A quick check of the menu showed that you could get a Daddy O burger for $18. Ok, that is a little high for a burger but not outrageous.
