The March 1962 Great Northeast Storm
The March 1962 Great Northeast Storm: A Northeast Storm devastated the island in March of 1962. Lives were lost. Thousands of properties were destroyed or severely damaged. Marinas were wiped out.
The aftermath left the island cut through from the ocean to the bay in several places. A destroyer broke loose from it’s tow and was beached in Holgate.
The USS Monssen was being towed while the March 1962 Nor’easter ravaged Long Beach Island. She broke loose from her tow and ended up hard aground in Holgate.
