Long Beach Island has what is arguably one of the best bays on the coast. It is about 18 miles long with inlets at the north and south ends. It averages about 4 to 5 miles wide at any given point.
While much of the bay is shallow mud flats it can be used for sailing, jet skis and shallow draft boats. The Intracoastal waterway runs along the island for deeper draft vessels.
There are a number of ramps and marinas. Charter and head boats offer fishing in Beach Haven and Barnegat Light. The A. J. Meerwald, a restored tall ship usually visits the island during the summer. The Black Pearl sails from Beach Haven for daily pirate excursions and sunset party cruises.
